Lip Augmentation: Filler Injections or Fat Transfer?

Thanks to the progress in medicine, you can now have the lips you always wanted.

lip augmentation

Lip correction is an increasingly popular aesthetic procedure among both locals and foreigners in Lithuania. Some women undergo the procedure to have more symmetrical lips, some do it to correct the drooping lip corners. Lip enlargement, however, remains the most demanded type of lip correction.

Usually, mature women wish to restore the lost volume of their lips, while younger ones desire to enhance the appearance by getting fuller lips with more apparent contours.  Whatever the case, it is good to have a basic understanding of the procedure before coming to a doctor.

Filler Injections

Lip enlargement with filler injections is a popular choice as it is fast, easy, and causes little pain.  The fillers, made of hyaluronic acid formula, temporarily contribute to the volume and contours of lips, making them look and feel natural. Since hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the human body, the fillers are very unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. Some of the injections, however, may contain lidocaine, a local anesthetic, which can cause allergy to some. If you are allergic to it, make sure to inform your doctor before choosing the procedure.

The main drawback of the fillers is that they can cramp water molecules, causing more volume than intended. Also, the result lasts for 3-4 months on average, meaning the patient has to repeat the procedure regularly to maintain the look.

Fat Transfer

Fat transfer, another widely used method, employs the patient’s fat to enlarge their lips. To perform the procedure, a doctor first has to extract fat from other areas of the body, such as hips, belly, or thighs. Second, the cells have to be isolated and purified via a scientific method before being injected into the lips. This procedure is a bit more complicated when compared to other methods of lip augmentation, but it stands out as the one giving a longer-lasting natural size and look.

The main concern regarding this procedure is whether the organism will absorb all of the fat cells. It is hard to predict how each body will react.

To achieve the desired result and reduce the risks, one of the renowned Lithuanian plastic surgeons from the Health Tourism Lithuania network, Dr. Gintaras Papeckys, usually combines both of the procedures. Based on the individual needs and condition, the doctor helps to find the safest and most effective option.
